FAFSA: Free Application for Federal Student Aid

MSU-Northern uses the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to determine how much financial aid you're eligible to receive, which could include grants, scholarships, work-study funds and loans. You must apply for aid every year, but with the right information in hand, it's easy. The 2026-27 FAFSA Form is open now for students who are applying for aid for the 2026-27 academic year (July 1, 2026, to June 30, 2027).

**Students starting the Spring/Summer 2026 semester will need to complete the 2025-2026 FAFSA Form.

What You Need to Fill Out the FAFSA

Here’s a list of everything you and your parent need to fill out, sign and submit the FAFSA:

  • An FSA ID. You, and whichever parent(s) will be contributors on your FAFSA, must create a separate FSA ID. You must create your FSA account at least three days before you file your FAFSA. Do this first! Create your FSA ID here.
  • You and your parent’s Social Security numbers. If you’re not a U.S. Citizen but fall into one of the categories that make you eligible for federal financial aid, you’ll also need your A-Number. I
  • Driver’s license (if you have one).
  • List of schools to which you want to send the FAFSA. The FAFSA code for MSU-Northern is 002533.
  • If applicable, other records of money earned and records of the value of student and parents' assets and investments (not including retirement funds).
