  1. Computer: Adequate speed and capacity to run your operating system and application software.
  2. Operating System: Windows 98/ME/NT/2000/XP, we highly recommend Windows XP Pro. If you are purchasing a new computer and have a choice of Microsoft XP systems, you should request the XP Professional version. More on why...
  3. Network Interface Card (NIC): You will need a name brand 10/100 mbps 10BaseT (twisted pair) card. We recommend a 3Com brand NIC. Network cards for your desktop system are available for sale thru the MSU-Northern Bookstore. MSU-Northern Bookstore and other local stores offer PCMCIA Ethernet cards for laptop computers as well.
  4. Cat5e Cable: A Category5e (Cat5e) cable will be needed to connect your PC to the data jack. Cables will be available for purchase through the MSU-Northern Bookstore. Note: Some PCMCIA Ethernet cards come with Cat5e cable.
  5. Hardware: Hardware should be compatible with the chosen operating system. See HTTP://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/default.mspx for details.

Please note: MSU-Northern Information Technology Services does not have the support staff or expertise to support every type of PCs, newer versions of Microsoft Windows Operating System have significantly greater hardware compatibility than earlier versions and are much easier to configure for Internet access.

Mac ComputerMacintosh Computers

  1. Computer: Adequate speed and capacity to run operating system and application software.
  2. Operating System: Mac OS 10.0 or better.
  3. Network Interface Card: Most Macs are sold as Ethernet-ready. The important thing is that they be 10BaseT (twisted pair) compatible. Cards and transponder cables may be available through the MSU-Northern Bookstore and other local vendors.
  4. Cat5e Cable: A Category5e (Cat5e) cable will be needed to connect your computer to the data jack. Cables will be available for purchase thru the MSU-Northern Bookstore.

Please note: We do not have the staff or expertise to support Macs that do not meet the above requirements.
