The following are suggestions for add-ons or upgrades to basic systems. Nothing on this list is required in order for your system to function on ResNet.

  • Personal Productivity Software such as Microsoft Office.
  • Personal Printer - something with a small footprint.
  • Speakers and headphones
  • Operating Manuals, Installation Disks - to help diagnose problems.
  • Copy of Hardware Warranty/Proof of Purchase - keep originals at home.
  • Surge Suppressor/Power Strip - for multiple devices
  • CD-RW drive. A CD-ROM drive capable of writing to CDs as well as reading from them. This is useful in transferring data, particularly larger files that will not fit on a disk. Sometimes, compact disks burned by a CD-RW are not readable by compact disk players five or more years old.
  • DVD drive. DVD drives can read DVDs and CDs. Some models can also write CDs. If you have a DVD drive, then no CD-ROM is needed, unless you have a DVD drive that cannot burn CDs and you also want a CD-RW drive.
  • Ergonomic keyboard. Using traditional keyboards for long periods of time over an extended period can cause serious injuries to the hands, wrists, and forearms. You can help prevent these injuries by purchasing an ergonomically designed keyboard that allows good hand positioning. Although more expensive, the benefit for your body is enormous.
  • Zip Drive. A disk drive that accepts ZIP disks, which are disks with hundreds of times the storage capacity of floppy diskettes. These drives can be installed in your computer, or there are also external drives usable with a connecting cable.
