Library Circulation Policies

FOR MSU-NORTHERN STUDENTS ON-CAMPUS

A current library card is required to check out material.

Loan Periods

These varying periods for different types of materials are established so all patrons have an equal chance to obtain and use the materials they need.
  • The majority of the materials in the book and document stacks may be borrowed for three weeks. A three-week renewal is allowed in most cases. Renewals can be made at the Circulation Desk in person with materials in hand; via telephone (265-3706, ext. 3037); or via email to jestrab@msun.edu.
  • Cassette players, microfiche, and portable microfiche readers may be borrowed for 3 days.

  • Unbound periodicals may be borrowed for 2 days.
  • Reference books, microfilm, bound periodicals, current issues of periodicals, newspapers and certain restricted materials do not circulate outside the library.
  • All library materials are subject to recall when needed for Reserve. It is not possible to renew a book or other material on which a "hold" has been placed by another borrower.
  • All checked out library material must be returned to the Circulation Desk.
  • All overdue library material is subject to fines.

Lost/Damaged/Overdue Material

The person who checks out library material is responsible for that material:
  • S/he will be charged a replacement fee for lost or damaged items.
  • S/he will be billed during the next registration for any items not returned by the end of a term.

FOR MSU-NORTHERN NORTHNET OR DISTANCE EDUCATION STUDENTS

  • A Montana State University - Northern library ID card will be sent to each NorthNet/Distance Education student upon request.
  • If you require reference services between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday you can call Northern's toll free number (800-662-6132) and ask for extension 3041. After hours call 406-265-3706 and leave a message. Your reference question will be answered by the first available library staff member.
  • To borrow library materials submit an Interlibrary Loan request form for each item.  For assistance between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday - Friday, call the campus toll free number (800-662-6132) and ask for extension 3036.  After hours call the Library at 406-265-3706. Be prepared to give us your patron barcode number, and any information we need pertaining to the material you wish to borrow. The material will be mailed to your address.  You may also send a request via email to  rnicholson@msun.edu  Please include name, email address and day and night phone numbers.
  • The majority of the materials in the book and document stacks may be borrowed for four weeks. One four week renewal is allowed in most cases.  NorthNet students may request renewal by telephone, email, fax (406-265-3799), or in writing.
  • Reference books, microfilm, periodicals, newspapers, and certain restricted materials do not circulate. Articles from these materials will need to be either scanned for electronic pickup, faxed or mailed to students.

FOR OTHER MONTANA UNIVERSITY SYSTEM STUDENTS


Students from other Montana colleges and universities may check out books, and microfiche from Montana State University-Northern. Return of this library material may be made at any Montana college or university (per CASLIM - Consortium of Academic and Special Libraries in Montana).

Montana State University-Northern students may check out material at most Montana college or university libraries upon presentation of a valid student identification card. Check with that library regarding their circulation policies.
