MSU-Northern Phone System Description
The MSU-Northern PBX (Private Broadcast Exchange), also called a
switch, is a Nortel digital PBX.

Our switch is equipped with many features, including:

  • CallPilot Voice mail menuing system,
  • Conference calling,
  • Call forwarding,
  • Call transfer,
  • Speed calling,
  • And many others.

Each of these features are sold to us separately and is very expensive,
this is why we may not have all of the features you might have seen
elsewhere. Over the years we have acquired the features that have been deemed most appropriate to our needs. Likewise in the future, as our needs change, so will the features.

The "private" in PBX might seem to imply that the switch is only for on
campus calling. That wouldn’t do us much good, we also need to be
able to contact the outside world. To make these connections we have
what are called trunks. These are the lines that connect us to the
outside world. Some of these trunks handle external local traffic, those
numbers that are not on campus but can be dialed without toll charges.
We also have trunks that are used to handle toll calls, trunks that are
used for watts lines (1-800 numbers), and other trunks as well. This is
why we sometimes experience difficulties with local numbers but we
cannot call locally, it depends on what trunks are having the problems.
Each of these trunks can handle 24 simultaneous conversations. We
are currently equipped with the following trunks:

2 external local total of 48 concurrent calls (incoming and/or outgoing)
these are DID/DOD (direct inward dial/direct outward dial).

3 external trunks that handle a variety of toll type services, including
standard toll calls, and a variety of other functions.

We are currently servicing over 700 lines, including modems, faxes,
telephones, and other equipment requiring telecommunications
connectivity. We are continually trying to maintain and upgrade our
system as needed. So if you see one us of coming out of a wiring closet
being attack by a giant copper octopus, don’t be alarmed, we like what
we do.

Long Distance Calling

All long distance calls are billed to the department. The Business Office
issues an itemized statement of all long distance calls for each
authorization code every month.

The University telephone system supports the business and academic
calls of University faculty and staff. The user should review the monthly
long distance statement to identify personal calls. The cost of personal
calls must be reimbursed to the Business Office.

The University does not permit calls to the 900 area code or to the
976 exchange.
