Winter 2004

The MSU-Northern Wrestling team completed a stellar season, claiming the 47th NAIA National Wrestling Team Championship in Great Falls, Montana on February 27th and 28th. The Lights amassed 169.5 points, the second most team points scored in a National Championship. Second place went to Menlo College with 133.5 points and third place went to the defending champions, Missouri Valley College with 117 points. This was the sixth National Wrestling Team Championship for the Northern wrestling team.

The Lights had eight All Americans and tied the 1958 record for individual champions with five, held by Mankato State University. Champions were Caleb Schaeffer at 133 pounds, Anthony Haukenberry at 149 pounds, Stryder Davis at 157 pounds, Kyle Fisher at 184 pounds and three time National Champ Emmett Willson at 197 pounds. Emmett was also voted for the second consecutive year, the "NAIA Outstanding Wrestler of the Year". Other All Americans for the Lights were, Chris Smith 2nd place at 133 pounds, Jesse Juarez 5th place at 174 pounds and David Waters 8th place at 174 pounds. Coach David Ray was voted by his peers as "Coach of the Year", this was his fourth time receiving this honor, which is more than any other coach. The MSU-Northern Wrestling team finished their dual season with a 16-1 record and the Lights only blemish came to NCAA Division I and the 2004 PAC 10 Champions, Boise State, by a score of 22-13. The Lights also claimed the NAIA Team Dual Championship in January, held at Cleveland State University. Defeats included Missouri Valley 28-7, Lindenwood University 30-12 and Menlo College 34-10. Caleb Schaeffer became the all time leader in victories and falls for a career with 165 and 83 respectively.
