The MSU-Northern Football team finished the 2003 campaign with an overall record of 1-9 and a 1-7 record in the Frontier Conference. The Lights lone win was a 29-22 victory on the road against Frontier perennial power Montana Tech. Although the Lights were competitive in a majority of their games, the young squad, dominated by freshman and sophomores, suffered through injuries and were out manned at a number of positions throughout the year. Senior defensive tackle Bomont Somerfeld was a bright spot for the Lights this past season. Bomont was named 1st Team All Conference for the third time in his career. A native of Power, MT, Bomont led the Frontier Conference with 18 tackles for loss this season, while finishing with 92 total tackles on the season. He was a four time all conference performer during his stellar career for the Lights. Bomont also earned NAIA 1st Team All American honors as well for his play on the field. Former head coach Walt Currie decided to step down after the 2003
season, and former Helena Capital High School (Helena, MT) Head Coach
Marc Sampson has been hired to replace Currie. Sampson, a native
of Helena, brings a wealth of high school and collegiate coaching experience
to the Lights and has enjoyed great success at Helena Capital. The Bruins
qualified for the State AA playoffs in six of his seven years as head
coach and won three state titles (1999, 2000, 2002). Samson's overall
record at Capital High was 67-12. Sampson has brought a new coaching staff,
great enthusiasm and excitement to the community and college, and has
been very busy recruiting top caliber student athletes to MSU-Northern.
Look for good things from the Lights football team next season and in
the years to come. |
