Northern Alum the AFLAC
National Assistant Coach of the Year

Winter 2003

Henry HamillA ten member panel of the top sports writers in the United States recently selected Coach Henry Hamill as the National Assistant Coach of the Year. This award recognizes the unsung Heroes of American Sports. Criteria for this prestigious award includes longevity of service, knowledge, long term success, special contributions to the school and/or community, and overcoming obstacles. Hamill was nominated by retired Superintendent of Schools, Rip Holo.

Known as the "Wolf Point Flash" (because of his quickness) during his college football years, he played for Coach Tom Reynolds in the late 60's at Northern Montana College (now MSU-Northern). After graduating in 1971, Henry was a head coach for the first fifteen of his thirty years in coaching and was voted Montana's Coach of The Year in 1974 and 1980. In 1986, he moved to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho and assumed an assistant role as an offensive line coach where his teams were know for their solid fundamentals with both the run and the pass. That began an exemplary trail of success as he has taken four different teams, at four different levels of competition, to six title games.

He is known for his expertise handling the "at risk" athlete. Lisa Hall, District Coordinator for AFLAC says, "he makes a living of turning kids into great players that would not have made the team without him. His leadership on and off the field has gained the respect of every football program in Idaho. He is simply "the best offensive line coach in Idaho" and his record proves it.
