SIFE Club Wins

Competing against much larger universities, students in the Montana State University-Northern Students In Free Enterprise club won First-Runner-Up in their league.

During the SIFE competition, the club members had the opportunity to present the club's accomplishments for the year before a panel of entrepreneurs and business people from the Great Northwest. "I think each of us made an exceptional presentation," said student Shannon Billmayer. "I'm very proud of everybody." Among the accomplishments that SIFE students presented were designing a first-ever Northern Montana Manufacturing Conference and sponsoring adult education computer classes. MSU-Northern's SIFE club serves an area of 59,000 square miles, the largest at the conference.

SIFE is an international organization of college students with broad goals of educating communities in free enterprise. Each chapter translates national goals into local projects, and once a year, individual chapters compete, each providing an annual report. Over the last three years, MSU-Northern's SIFE club has competed annually in Seattle. Last year the club won Second- Runner-Up in their league. Those who competed included Bill Blake, Patty Scott, Kyndra Moore, Jackie Salveson, Nicky Cheng, and Shannon Billmayer.

"The trip was not all work," recalls Lanny Wilke, the MSU-Northern Business instructor who accompanied the students. "It was also an opportunity to show the students some of the terrific country that we live in. More than half the fun is watching the students get to know each other better and become a stronger team."
