Death Racer Northern Alum Competes for the
"Survival of the Fittest"
by Emmy Lu Olson

Summer 2002

Daniel R. Brenden, a ' 73 Northern grad, competes for the title "Survival of the Fittest". Having a passion for running, Brenden won the Senior's Division of the toughest adventure running race in the world. The Death Race takes runners through plenty of creeks and over three mountain summits equaling more than 4,000 meters of elevation change. That's over 125 kilometers, which is why it is one of the toughest 24-hour races in the world. Divided into five sections, runners race rolling hills, long, sustained climbs and steep scrambles with rough terrain and elevation changes of 1,500 meters. Not only does it take more than extreme fitness and iron will to conquer this race, but a definite game plan strategy and plenty of preparation is a key component. These are not the only challenges as much of the terrain is heavily treed and many racers struggle in the dark ...in bear country, yet!!

To top it off, Brenden also completed the Himalayan 101 mile race and the escape race from Alcatraz, swimming to San Francisco. After completing these phenomenal achievements, now you know why we think Daniel Brenden is a "survivor?" Daniel is a retired attorney, living in Phoenix, Arizona.
