MSU-Northern Manufacturing Students Win First
Summer 2001
MSU-Northern's Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) Club placed first in the nation's largest machining and manufacturing expo competition. Held March 26 at the Western Tool and Exposition Conference in the Los Angeles

Convention Center, a total of twelve schools competed against Northern, including Arizona State, Brigham Young, and San Diego State Universities. The club returned home with a trophy, certificate, and career enhancing technical software.

"Our project was a "revo-driver", SME club member Charles Fremin explained, "a bent shaft screwdriver with an interchangeable end that spins in the handle for quick operation and a "s" shaped adapter that fits any 1/4-inch hex shank screwdriver handle." Eleven club members attended the event, with judges ranking team projects according to creativity, complexity, design quality, manufacturability, teamwork, safety, and presentation.

Andrew Johnson said, "I think what set MSU-Northern apart from the competition was their teamwork and their ability to take their project from a simple concept to a finished product," Fremin added that "this means that they started with an idea and went through all aspects of the manufacturing process: design, prototype, market research, mass production, and packaging."
