Spring 1998

Football Returns to Northern
Montana State University-Northern is pleased to announce that we will be starting men’s football and women’s soccer programs this fall.

Northern was the Frontier Conference Division Champion in 1968. A high spirited campus coupled with an aggressive style of football made Northern a favorite place for talented athletes from all over the state. In 1971, Northern was forced to shut down its program due to the nature of state funding. Changes in the funding base have now made it advantageous for Northern to again take the field in football.

MSU-Northern Chancellor Bill Daehling said, "During my eight years as Chancellor I have been continually asked ‘when are you going to bring football back to Northern.’ my pat answer has always been that I would love to bring football back. I gave public notice that $250,000 was needed to get it going. Little did I know that the foundation would rally together and come up with the funds to make it happen." What was once just a dream was now given a chance to become reality. After a great deal of research, the administration has been able to prove that football and soccer are a viable addition to MSU-Northern’s sports program.

Daehling presented the football/soccer proposal at the last Board of Regents meeting. The Regents assigned the final decision to Chancellor Bill Daehling, MSU President Mike Malone and Commissioner of Higher Education Richard Crofts. On Tuesday, February 10th the official decision was made to reestablish men’s football and start a women’s soccer program at Northern.

Daehling said "It is our desire to see football enhance the existing programs by encouraging at least an additional 100 students to join our campus". The search for coaches will begin right away. A limited program will be run next year to give staff and students time to get the program developed. Northern will be scheduled for full Frontier Conference play by the fall of 1999.

If you are interested in applying for one of the coaching positions or playing on one of the teams, call MSU-Northern at 1-800-662-6132.

Chancellor Search Down to Five
The 17-member search committee has reviewed 41 applicants from all over the United States, and has released the five finalists for the Chancellor position. Their names and current job titles are as follows:

Dr. William Connellan - Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, Oakland University, Rochester, Michigan.
Dr. John Dalphin - Assistant to the Chancellor for Technology and Special Projects, Indiana University East, Richmond, Indiana.
Dr. Todd Hutton - Vice President for Academic Administration, Willamette University, Salem, Oregon.
Dr. James Matthews - interim president, Presbyterian Pan American School, Kingsville, Texas.
Dr. Michael Rao - President, Mission College, Santa Clara, California.

Each candidate is scheduled to spend two days on campus between February 23 and March 10 to meet with faculty, staff, administration and community people. The top three candidates will be recommended to President Malone, and he will make the final choice. The committee hopes to have the new chancellor selected by the end of March. We will let you know the outcome of this search in the next issue of Aurora Borealis.

What is the six-mill levy?
The six-mill levy, or referendum 133, is one of the ways the state funds higher education. In fact, the six mill levy has supported higher education since 1920. It is voted on every 10 years and it has not increased in 50 years. On the average, the six-mill levy represents about 1.5 percent of a property owner’s tax bill. For example, if your total is $500 per year in property tax, $7.50 goes to higher education. This levy represents 13.86% of the total state support to higher education. This money helps to educate the 34,700 students who are attending the six institutions in the University System and the five Colleges of Technology. Referendum 133 will be coming up for a vote this year.

Four inducted into Hall of Fame
Four outstanding individuals were inducted into the Northern Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame during Homecoming week activities on Saturday evening, February 14, 1998.

Each year MSU-Northern accepts nominations for athletes and coaches who have made major contributions in the world of athletics. These individuals were honored in half-time ceremonies during the Saturday Lights Basketball game and remembered with a plaque in the Hall of Fame display located in the Armory Gym on the MSU-Northern campus. The recipients of this year’s honors are: Kim L. Haines of Seeley Lake, Robert J. Hodge of Missoula, Don Hull of Chester, and Mike Mazurkiewicz of Havre.

Kim L. Haines, Seeley Lake, currently holds the title for the most wins as an active boys’ basketball coach for the State of Montana with over 500 wins. His love for and knowledge of basketball were seen back in 1953 when he played on the Northern Montana College (now MSU-Northern) basketball team, earning All-Conference honors his sophomore and senior years. During one of his years at Northern, the team made the NAIA playoffs. He put his education and basketball on hold in 1955 to join the service, and then he returned to complete his degree from Northern in 1960. After earning a master’s degree in 1964 from the University of Northern Iowa, he became the principal, athletic director and coach at Seeley-Swan High School. Since then, he has won many awards including: the MCA Class C Coach of the Year for boys’ basketball (1968), recognition for developing the girls’ and boys’ track programs in Montana (1982), USA Track and Field Presidents Award - Recognition of Outstanding Effort and Achievement (1985), Frank Sevigne Award (1988), elected as the National Youth Track and Field Chairman for USA Track and Field’s National governing body (1989), Ray Rocene Award, Sportsman of the Year as awarded by the Missoulian (1991) and the Montana Coaches Hall of Fame (1992).

Robert J. Hodge, Missoula, holds Northern’s records for the most rushing yards at 1108 yards, total points scored in a single season and the career scoring records in football. Respected by his teammates for his abilities to capitalize on their efforts and exploit the opponent’s defense, he was a leader on and off the football field. He was recruited as a kicking specialist and handled the kicking duties on fields goals, extra points and kickoffs. Bob was an All-Conference running back for four years and an honorable mention All-American. Since college, Bob has been teaching Industrial Arts for more than 27 years, currently at Florence-Carlton High School. During these years, he has worked with the youth in his community by coaching football, track and wrestling.

Don Hull, Chester, is one of the best examples of commitment, dedication and drive to ever set foot on a Northern basketball court. As team captain, Don led the team in field goal and free throw percentages, scoring, rebounding and defense. Known for his hustle and work ethic, Don was twice named to the All-Conference Honorable Mention team. Don has been farming and ranching since graduating from Northern. He maintains his involvement in sports and his community as a referee for college and junior high girls’ and boys’ basketball games. He also works with high school football games, coaches at the Big Sky State Games, umpires softball games in the summer and plays intramural basketball in the winter.

Mike Mazurkiewicz, Havre, still holds the record for the most wrestling wins (127) in Northern’s history. He was an assistant wrestling coach at Northern from 1988-1990. A two-time All-American, he helped his team become District 12 Champions by bringing home third and fifth place finishes at the NAIA National Tournament. Mike has held the school records for wins, takedowns, escapes, team points and match points. In 1990, Mike began work as an assistant wrestling coach for Havre High School where he helped the team to place at the state and divisional levels in 1991, 1992, and 1994. Currently, Mike is the head wrestling coach for the Havre Wrestling Club.

Nursing Program on Solid Ground
Early in the fall there was a great deal of concern about the future in Northern’s nursing program. The community rallied together and sent a very strong message to Helena and Bozeman that Northern’s nursing program was essential to the stability of the healthcare system along the Hi-line. As a result, Commissioner of Higher Education, Richard Crofts visited the campus to hear what the community had to say.

Several weeks later, President Michael Malone visited Northern’s campus and spoke to a crowd of more than 100 concerned individuals. Malone said, "There is no thought in my mind, and there never has been, that either the two-year program or the four-year program ought to be eliminated, or that control of the program ought to be moved to MSU-Bozeman."

A resent survey to hospitals in Montana has also supported the importance of a two-year nursing program. We want to thank the community of Havre for their strong support for this important program.
