Program Overview

This program prepares the graduate for employment as a teacher. Demand is high for teachers of Industrial Technology as there exists a national shortage in this area. In addition, the strong technical background of graduates opens up numerous other career opportunities such as industrial training and sales, construction and industrial management, and field service representative.

During the first two years of the program emphasis is placed on developing the wide variety of technical skills necessary to be successfully employed in the field with a strong emphasis on hands on lab work. Technology areas covered include: woodworking and construction; machining, welding and manufacturing; communications and design drafting; and energy and transportation. Emphasis is placed on developing skills in utilizing tools, materials, machines, and processes as well as developing insight and understanding in the application of technological concepts. In addition, students broaden their educational experience by taking courses in communications, social sciences, humanities, and math and science. Students also take foundation courses introducing them to the field of teacher education.

During the last two years of the program, emphasis is placed on the teacher education components of the degree and the application of this knowledge to the teaching of Industrial Technology. Professional education courses are required for licensure. Students work with faculty in the education department in meeting the requirements for admission and retention in the teacher education program.

Career Opportunities

Successful graduates of this program will be able to apply for teacher licensure with certification in the field of Industrial Technology having met the requirements of the Board of Public Education (section 10.58.515)
