General Education
Program Overview

It is OK to be undecided. In fact, many students enter college without established concrete educational goals. A recent national survey indicates that the average college student changes majors four times before graduating!

Undecided or not, you will spend much of your freshman year completing a variety of courses included in the General Education requirements. This course work is common to all majors, and not focused in any specific degree program.

The General Education Associate of Arts degree is designed for students who expect to complete a bachelor's degree at MSU-Northern but are undecided on a major, or who wish to complete their general education requirements at MSU-Northern before transferring to another institution to complete the remaining requirements for a Bachelor's degree. Completion of the Associate of Arts degree at Northern satisfies all Bachelor degree general education requirements throughout the Montana University system.

The Associate of Arts degree requires that students complete MSU-Northern's General Education Core. Students enrolled in the Associate of Arts degree who plan to transfer to a Bachelor's degree program should contact the office of the Dean of Education, Arts and Sciences, and Nursing early in their first semester for assistance in choosing electives from the Transferable Core and electives to support their future plans.
