Information Technology Services: Spam Filtering

Portal Spam Filtering

All Portal email is scanned for viruses and spam. The default setting is to send each account a quarantine report daily which will allow users to release email that may have been incorrectly flagged as spam. While email is in quarantine, it will not count towards your email quota.

Previously, spam was filtered into a "junk" folder and many users set up additional spam filters to deal with what got through. You may never have even seen those emails if you didn't look in that folder. The downside of that system was that those emails counted towards your quota, and people often lost valid emails that were incorrectly flagged as spam. So, you're getting just as much spam as ever...it's just coming to you in a more noticeable way. As mentioned above, if you don't want daily quarantine reports, you can customize your individual settings.

Change Your Settings

You can change your individual settings, quarantine reporting options or set a whitelist by going to
http://myspam.montana.edu/quarantine.

  1. Use your portal email address and password to login (username@myportal.montana.edu)
  2. Click on the word Settings
  3. Under Email Filtering select the Quarantine Reporting Options
  4. Check Override my domain defaults
  5. Change it to a different amount or uncheck Generate Reports

If email is not moved out of quarantine within 7 days, it will be automatically deleted. Keep in mind that this may result in valid emails getting deleted, so it's a good idea to look at the Quarantine Report periodically.

Reducing Spam

Things you can do to reduce the amount of spam you receive:

· Protect your email address - treat it like your phone number

· Don't post your email address in public places (e.g., newsgroups, message boards, chat rooms) where spammers mine for email addresses.

· Never respond to unsolicited email - this can alert the sender that your email address is valid.

· Never click on a URL or web site listed in spam - this will also alert the sender that your email address is valid.

· Never forward spam chain letters.
