As a registered student, you are provided a free e-mail account shortly after registering that can store up to 50 MB. This is your official e-mail account for ALL University related matters. You can access your e-mail through MyPortal.
In most instances, your User Name for MyPortal access is determined by taking your first name (according to what the campus registrar’s office has on file) and your entire last name with no spaces, dashes, apostrophes, or quotation marks. For example:
The User Name for Robert Benjamin Ba’zooka, Jr. is: Robert.Bazooka
You can find your User Name by logging on to MyInfo (aka Banner Web), clicking on Enter Secure Area, and entering your student ID and PIN. If you don't know your MyInfo PIN, contact the Registrar's office.

You can bring your student ID to the ITS Help Desk in Cowan Hall 117B and we can find out what your User Name is for you.
For NEW students, your password the very first time you log-in is your birth date, in this format: MMDDYY For example:
The starting password for someone born on January 3, 1989 is: 010389
The starting password for someone born on December 14,1991 is: 121491
You will be required to change your password the first time you logon.
Password requirements for the Portal are:
- The password length must between 8 and 20 characters.
- The password must contain a letter.
- The password must contain a digit.
- The password must contain at least one of these special characters: $,*,%,@,#,&.

Always remember to LOG OFF the Portal by clicking Logout icon in the upper right hand corner and close your browser to protect your information!
Your User Name for accessing MSU-Northern’s network the lab machines on campus is the same as your MyPortal User Name (see above).
Your password the very first time you log-in is your birth date, in this format: DD-MMM-YY
For example:
The starting password for someone born on January 3, 1989 is: 03-JAN-89
The starting password for someone born on December 14, 1991 is: 14-DEC-91
You will be required to change your password the first time you logon.
Your Northern network access password must meet the following complexity requirements:
- Must be a minimum of 8 characters in length
- Must contain characters from three of the following four categories:
- Uppercase characters (A through Z)
- Lowercase characters (a through z)
- Digits (0 through 9)
- Non-alphanumeric characters:
!@#$%^&*()_+|~-=\`{}[]:";'<>?,./

Always remember to LOG OFF the computer to protect your information!
If you need to have your Banner PIN reset, please go to the Registrar's Office or the ITS Help Desk and tell them "I need my Banner PIN reset". Remember to bring your student ID!

Your Username and Password will be identical to your Portal Username and Password (see above).
Please note: Desire2Learn accounts are sometimes not available until a few days after registering for a class.
