What is your favorite place on campus?
My favorite place on campus is Pershing Hall. Many art classes are held in Pershing and I love being able to walk into the building and be surrounded by color and imagination. I enjoy seeing the creativity of Northern students and taking a break from hectic classes. The art and the relaxed vibe of Pershing reminds me to slow down and enjoy where I am, the people I love, and the beauty around me.
What is your favorite place in Havre?
During the summer months, I work at a small coffee shop in my hometown, so naturally one of my favorite places in Havre is a coffee shop. Although I can’t pick just one! The Coffee Hound makes a mean Americano and their homemade Hound Bars are a perfect after class pick-me-up. The 5th Avenue Grind is my favorite when the weather gets a little warmer and I’m craving a sack lunch and iced coffee to enjoy at the park with friends. And The Press in the mall is a great place to grab a large black coffee and crank out some homework.
If you were able to relive your freshman year, what advice would you give yourself?
I would tell myself to be more balanced. I was so concerned with academics, I forgot that one of the best parts of a college experience is making new friends and challenging myself! Now, don’t get me wrong, you definitely need to do your homework and go to class, but I’ve learned that making time for fun is just as important. After attending school at Northern the past 2 ½ years, I’ve learned to juggle school, friends, work, and extracurricular activities. Now I can’t imagine not being on the go 24/7!
What is your most memorable moment at Northern thus far?
My most memorable moment thus far has been becoming a resident assistant (RA) in the residence halls on Northern’s campus. This experience has taught me a great deal about responsibility, compassion, and myself. Not only have I been able develop leadership skills, I have formed lasting friendships with residents and fellow RAs. I love being able to open my door and have a community all around me. It seems as if I am constantly making new friends living in the residence halls and I always have someone to talk to or hang out with.
If you could live at any other time in history when would it be and why?
I would live in the Roaring ‘20s if I could pick any time in history. I would get dressed up with my friends every Friday to go dance the night away at a jazz influenced speakeasy. I love the newfound freedom in styling, the short bob haircuts that were embraced by women, and the music and literature that became popular during this time period. One of my favorite books was published during this era, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. And Hey Dolly by Louis Armstrong… he could do no wrong with his wonderfully raspy voice and cleverness on the trumpet!
Why did you decide Northern?
When I began to look at potential Universities to attend, I started big. All the schools I looked at had over 10,000 students attending. As I started touring campuses and making my decision on where to continue my education, I realized I wanted a smaller university and less students. When I visited Northern for the first time, it felt right. I can’t give high enough praise to those overseeing my visit because they truly made me feel like more than another number on their way to reach an enrollment quota. When I started school in the Fall of 2010, I knew I had made the right choice. My classes were small, my professors personable, and friendly smiles and greetings abounded. This continues to be one of my favorite characteristics of Northern.
