"Air of Innocence" Batik by Mary Nault
Brenton Beard

"Air of Innocence" is an artistic piece by Mary Nault, who is the artist of the month invited by the MSUN Multicultural Center in celebration of November, American Indian Heritage Month. The Multicultural Center invites everyone to visit and admire Nault's art. The Center is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Nault says of her work, "My definition of art is 'play.' I like to try new techniques and mediums. It's messy, and it's fun. The results can be exciting or even amazing. They can also be disappointing. Either way, I keep painting. My mediums are watercolor, acrylic and batik." Explaining her piece "Air of Innocence," Nault said, "The Sugarbeet Festival in Chinook, Montana, draws a diverse group of people. As I was enjoying the festivities, several children came running by. One in particular stood out. Boy or girl? Then I saw the feather earrings. I had to have a picture because I knew I wanted to paint her. I decided to do her in batik, concentrating on the variations of skin tones and working to portray an 'Air of Innocence.'"

The MSU-N Office of Diversity Awareness and Multicultural Programs (ODAMP) invites local and regional artists to exhibit their pieces, preferably those that have some link to multicultural themes. For more information, contact c.estrada.underwood@msun.edu or call (406) 265-3589.
