Setting
Up
The
instructions on this page should help you
connect your personal computer to the Montana State University-Northern
ResNet Network.
|
|
Note: The ResNet outlet in your room normally houses both telephone
and Ethernet connections. Telephone jacks are identified with a blue phone
icon ,
and the Ethernet jacks have a red computer icon .
 |
|

It
is important that you do NOT connect any regular modem/telephone
cables to an Ethernet port as this may damage the jack!
|
- Start
with the power off on your computer.
- Your computer
must have a network card installed. Not a modem card: it must
be a 10/100 Category 5e network card.

NOT this:
 |
- You will
also need a Category 5e patch cable to connect your computer to the
data jack. You can purchase a Cat5e patch cable from the MSU-Northern
Bookstore. Not even Wal-Mart sells them for less and the Bookstore has
the right length!

- Look under
the desk either on the right or left side of the room and locate the
network jack, it will have a RED Computer
Icon
to indicate that it is a network connection for a computer. If you are
in a double room and none of the wall jacks on your side have Red Computer
Icon, you will need to contact the ITS
Help Desk to have one connected for you.
- Locate
the network connection on the back of your computer. It will look like
the wall jack. A Cat5 patch cable will not work in a modem connection.
If you cannot find this connector on the back of your computer, you
may need to purchase a 10/100 network card, also available at the bookstore.
- Plug one
end of the Category 5e cable into the network jack and the other end
into the back of your computer.
- Turn on
the power to your computer.
- Once the operating system has started and you're ready to go, start your preferred browser and you will be connected to the Clean Access system. Refer to the the ResNet User's Guide (PDF, 1.5Mb) for detailed instructions from this point.
If you have
problems or these steps do not work, contact your Resident Assistant or
contact the ITS Help Desk @ 3765.
