The MSU-Northern Foundation was established in 1977 to support and enhance the  University. The Foundation, affiliated with  the University, is an independent, non-profit organization under the Internal Revenue Service 501 (c) (3) designation. It is governed by a 12 member Board of Trustees elected from the private sector and five ex-officio representatives appointed from campus.

The Foundation's mission is to gather, manage, and disburse assets to enhance and support the University's academic, applied research and public service missions.

In the broadest sense, the purposes of the Foundation are to:

  • Create an awareness within the private sector of the University's vision and future direction,
  • Implement a master plan to assist the University accomplish its mission through annual gifts, grants, planned gifts and other forms of financial support, and
  • Safeguard and manage the assets derived from private support.

To fulfill these purposes, the Foundation solicits  gifts from alumni, friends, faculty and staff, corporations, organizations, and private foundations on both an annual and capital basis.

The Foundation coordinates all fund-raising activities conducted for the benefit of the University and approved by the University Chancellor.

A Welcome from the Director

Welcome to Montana State University-Northern Foundation's website.  The relationship between the Foundation and the University can be characterized as a "joint venture".  An important feature to our model is the integration it encourages between the University planning and the Foundation activities.

Northern, in turn, has the opportunity to immerse alumni, business, industry, and friends in the mainstream of University thinking, to explain why particular directions are taken, and how each goal fits into the University's master plan. This enables Northern to be successful in presenting its case as a worthy investment.  Each of us within the Northern family accept the responsibility you place on us through your investment.  We are here to teach, to recruit, and to acquire supplemental funds.  Your investment in Montana State University-Northern is an investment in preparing students today, for tomorrow's workforce.
