Each year hundreds of MSU-Northern alumni, friends, parents, faculty and staff members make gifts to Montana State University-Northern through the Annual Giving Program. Their gifts make a real difference in the areas of teaching, applied research, public service and outreach and focus on excellence.

By contributing through the Annual Giving Program your annual support may take many forms. It may be directed to the library, scholarships,, student services or a college, department, program, or area of your choice.

Annual Fund dollars provide vital support that help the University accomplish the following priorities:

  • Achieve NCATE accreditation reaffirmation for teacher educationimplement a marketing campaign to recruit students regionally and internationally in key technology programsIncrease student retention by five percent per yearDevelop articulation and transfer agreements with all tribal and community colleges in MontanaDouble the volume of grants and sponsored research within five years
  • Develop regional programs throughout North Central Montana

The Campus Appeal

Northern's dedicated faculty and staff make our campus a great one. Whether we teach, maintain the physical plant, conduct research, provide clerical support or administer policies and programs, our combined efforts define the University for our students and for the community.

During the 2000-01 year, 60 employees and retirees gave $24,840 toward the Annual Fund total of $2,608,548, supporting scholarships, applied research programs, athletics, the VandeBogart library and more.

Matching Gifts

Did you know it is possible to double or even triple the value of your gift to MSU-Northern if your company matches employee contributions to higher education?  Contact your personnel office to see if your company has a Matching Gift program. If they do, the rest is easy:

  • Contact your personnel office for eligibility requirements and an application form. (Remember, many companies also match the gifts of retirees, spouses, and surviving spouses).
  • Follow your company's procedures and complete the appropriate form.
  • Mail your completed form to the MSU-Northern Foundation, PO Box 1691, Havre, Montana 59501.

Each year the Northern Alumni Association attempts to contact all alumni of the University by telephone. Alumni are individuals who have successfully completed a quarter or semester of attendance at Northern Montana College or Montana State University-Northern.

Purpose

The annual Phonathon serves a dual purpose for the Association. The Phonathon is the primary fund raising activity of the Alumni Association and contributions received during the Phonathon support the daily operation of the Alumni Office, publication of the Alumni Association newspaper, Aurora Borealis, alumni reunions and special projects such as the restoration of the "Goose" and special projects sponsored by campus groups that request funds from the Association. Alumni donors contacted during the Phonathon may also request that their gifts be designated or restricted to a campus department or project.

Through the Phonathon the Association is able to update the records of alumni they reach and note changes in address, phone number, and employment.

The Callers

The Association hires MSU-Northern students to make the calls weekdays during early evening hours. Students receive an hourly salary and a commission based on the dollars they raise. There are two calling periods of approximately six weeks each in the Fall and Spring.

Students ask for a donation to the Association, and they are prepared to answer any questions alumni might have about the University. Alumni who indicate an interest in giving receive a mailed pledge form following the call. If you receive a call from a student on behalf of the Alumni Association, take the opportunity to find out how things have changed since you last visited MSU!

The Phonathon is the major fund-raiser for the Alumni Association, and generates over $50,000 in gifts each year.

Direct Mail

If the Association is not able to reach you during the phonathon, a letter requesting your support is sent to you from the Alumni Office. When you receive this letter, please take a moment to review the campus needs and priorities. Your gift, whatever the amount, can make a difference. Your support will help keep Northern a strong and vital campus.
