Resource Profile for

Learning Experience Assessment Program:

The opportunity to earn college credit for what has been learned through life, work, and special interest experiences is provided through the program for Portfolio Assessment. While enrolled in the Portfolio Process course, LEAP 289, students are required to prepare a formal, written narrative of professional quality, of these experiences by following the guidelines set forth in the Portfolio Process Manual. He/she will specify what knowledge, skills, and attitudes have been learned from these experiences and will document the college equivalent course learning outcomes resulting from these experiences. The completed document is assessed by individual faculty assessors and appropriate department chairperson(s), reviewed by a committee appointed by the Faculty Senate President, and certified by the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.

A student may be able to synthesize his/her learning into a professional quality document that is evidence for earning credit toward graduation. Up to 25% of credit toward graduation may be earned from life experience learning. The course is a significant self-study opportunity as the individual must delve extensively into self-experience and its meaning. The student will demonstrate considerable analytical, synthesizing, organizational writing and presentation ability. The documentation is NOT of experience, but of learning achieved through experiences.

A student can gain credit through LEAP if he/she has life experience from the following:

  • Workplace training;

  • Community service;

  • Work experience and evaluation;

  • Volunteerism;

  • Professional development;

  • Skilled hobby;

  • Trade competency; and,

  • Leadership.
