FRESNO PACIFIC STILL LEADING
NAIA: The top
seven positions failed to change in this week’s NAIA Top 25 Poll as Fresno
Pacific (17-0) continues to lead the pack with 12 of 13 first-place votes.
National American, S.D. (19-0), which was idle last week and this upcoming week,
remained second with the last first-place vote. California Baptist (15-2) and
Madonna (25-0) follow in third and fourth, while Dickinson State, N.D. (13-2), St. Mary, Neb. (17-3) and Dordt (22-2) remain fifth through seventh.
Missouri Baptist (15-2) moved up one spot to eighth, while Columbia, Mo. (17-1) climbed two holes to ninth. Concordia, Calif. (13-4) rocketed to 10th this week after
being ranked 20th in the Sept. 28 poll.
THE POLL SHUFFLE: Southern Oregon (16-3) climbed to 11th from 15
last week after defeating Northwest, Wash. (16-1), which dropped from 10th to
14th this week. Azusa Pacific (13-4) fell eight spots to 16 after
losing to then-20th-ranked Concordia, Calif. Cornerstone (18-7) moved back into the poll this week
at number 24 after extending undefeated Madonna to four games. Vanguard (16-3),
which lost to Point Loma Nazarene (12-6) last week, plummeted 12 spots in this
week’s poll, falling from 14th to being listed
26th.

SEARCHING FOR STORY IDEAS: The AVCA produces a weekly CSTV/AVCA Facts
on File National Volleyball Update for the NAIA. However, the AVCA needs the
help of coaches and sports information directors to make this newsletter better.
Please send any story or noteworthy ideas, 30-kill performances, triple-doubles
(involving kills, assists, blocks, digs, aces) or 500 home crowds to the AVCA by
e-mail (naia@avca.org) by fax to 719-576-7778. If
your school produces weekly notes, the AVCA would also like to receive that
information.

AVCA ORGANIZES HURRICANE RELIEF FUNDRAISER:
The American Volleyball Coaches Association has established a Hurricane Relief
Fund to help out victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The AVCA, with its
annual convention in San Antonio this December where many of the victims have
relocated, has donated $2,500 to the San Antonio Red Cross with a matching
donation program. For more details on how to donate, click the following link:

Coach Brenda Williams will be inducted into the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic
Conference Hall of Fame on Oct. 16 at 4 p.m. on the campus of Saint Xavier in Chicago. Williams has led the Tigers to four NAIA National
Tournaments and four CCAC championships in 10 seasons at Olivet. She holds a
277-169 record in nine-plus seasons. Prior to her arrival at Olivet, the Tigers
had never advanced to the NAIA National Tournament. Williams currently
represents the NAIA on the American Volleyball Coaches Association Board of
Directors.
SUNBIRDS SHUT DOWN
CAL STATE
BAKERSFIELD:
Fresno Pacific
(19-0) ran its win streak to 19 matches to start the season with a convincing
30-14, 30-20, 30-22 victory on the road over NCAA Division II Cal State
Bakersfield on Oct. 4. Cal State Bakersfield received votes in the CSTV/AVCA
Division II Coaches Top 25 Poll. The Sunbirds hit .317 as a team behind 37
assists from Shu Liu, who added six kills, three aces, five digs and two blocks.
Lorena Zuleta hit .476 with 11 kills and five blocks for FPU, while Thais Julio
produced a match-high 12 kills in the victory.
CRUSADERS OVERWHELM SAINTS: Madonna (26-0)
kept its season-long win streak alive with a 30-23, 30-26, 30-23 victory over
Aquinas on Oct. 4. Natalja Tinina contributed a double-double of 18 kills and 21
digs in the three-game victory, in addition to four blocks. Laura Lesko hit .579
with 12 kills on 19 attacks to go with seven blocks. Stefanie Denardin provided
21 digs on defense, while Jacqui Gatt added 15 digs and three
aces.
SOUTHERN OREGON WINS KEY
DISTRICT ONE MATCH: Northwest (Wash.) entered its Sept. 30 home match
with Southern Oregon as the higher-ranked team, but the records meant nothing in
the end as the 15th-ranked Raiders upset the 10th-ranked
Eagles in five games. The last five meetings between the two conference rivals
have been decided in five games. Nicholette Le Bel hit .340 with 22 kills to
lead Southern
Oregon to a 30-14,
19-30, 30-18, 22-30, 15-12 victory. Jamie McCreay set the Raiders with 52
assists, 22 digs and three blocks. Mia Wortel hit .458 with 12 kills, while
Shanna Claflin and Jaclyn Hamilton-Smith each boasted 12 kills. Northwest’s
Jessie Buck tallied 19 kills and 14 digs for a double-double in the losing
effort, while Sarah Bendorf charted 13 kills. Dayna Casseday placed 31 digs on
the box score for the Eagles. Northwest had not lost at home since Oct.
2003.
56 A SEASON HIGH:
Houston Baptist sophomore Stephanie Lust set a new standard for the season with
a 56-dig performance in a five-game victory over Lubbock Christian on Sept. 24.
Based on reports submitted to the AVCA, no other player has touched 50 digs in a
single match this season. Friends’ Rachel Salvo produced a 48-dig match against
Kansas Wesleyan on Sept. 29, the second-most digs in a single match in
2005.
TWO 30-DIG CLUBS IN A
WEEK: Friends junior libero Rachel Salvo was busy in patrolling the
back row last week. She started the week with 48 digs in a five-game loss to
Kansas Wesleyan on Sept. 29. The match was decided by a 20-18 fifth-game score.
Just five days later, Salvo recorded 30 digs versus McPherson in a four-game
match on Oct. 4.
DEFENSIVE SPECIALIST
RECORDS 30 DIGS: Montana State-Northern defensive specialist Ashley
Roth provided her team with personal-best 30 digs in a 35-37, 30-25, 30-23,
21-30, 7-15 loss to Great Falls on Sept. 28. Roth normally plays outside hitter
for Montana State-Northern, but has shifted to defensive specialist. More
remarkably, she hit the 30-dig club without filling the libero
role.
QUICK SETS:
Savannah Art and Design extended its win streak to 12 matches
with victories over Warner Southern and St. Thomas (Fla.) on Oct. 1. In the process, the Bees won their own
Spikefest Volleyball Tournament championship ** Bryan’s Kim Barlow notched her
second 30-plus kill match of the season as she hammered 30 against Tennessee
Temple in a five-game victory on Sept. 30. She hit .480 for the match on 50
swings
PLAYER MILESTONES AND
RECORDS: Cedarville sophomore Sarah Zeltman became the
14th player in school history to reach 1,000-career kills. She
connected for her 1,000th kill on Sept. 23 against Olivet Nazarene **
Savannah Art and Design senior Ally Schramer broke the school’s all-time assist
record on Sept. 30 during a match against Webber International. She eclipsed the
former record of 3,202 assists held by Jamee Linton ** Mount Vernon Nazarene
middle blocker Shena Beheler became just the second sophomore in school history
to reach 1,000-career kills as she surpassed the milestone on Oct. 1 against
Cedarville
TEAM
MILESTONES: Madonna won its 24th straight match, a
three-game victory over St. Francis (Ind.) on Sept. 30, to open the season to
break the school record of 23-0 as best start to a season. The Crusaders have
extended its record to a 26-0 start after defeating Aquinas on Oct.
