Skylights finish sixth at Carroll College invite

The Montana State University-Northern golf team found the weather and course conditions to its liking on Monday and Tuesday at the Carroll College Invitational. The Skylights also found the competition to be better as well.

Northern finished sixth out of six teams that had enough golfers to register a team score. However, the Skylights still had a pretty good showing finishing with 1,261 strokes as a team. Lewis-Clark State won the tournament with a score of 989, while Rocky Mountain College was second with a 994.

Individually, Rachel Warren of Rocky won the tournament with a three-day score of 227. Nikki Olson of Lewis-Clark was second with a 230.

Northern was paced by junior Julie Wagner, who fired rounds of 93 and 90 on Monday and then fired her best round of the season on Tuesday with an 83. Senior Anita Strommen finished 10 strokes in back of Wagner with a 277 with rounds of 90, 91 and 96.

Junior Heather Riener fired an opening round of 112 and improved with rounds of 106 and 104 for a total of 322. Freshman Heather Haas rounded out the Skylights' scoring with rounds of 132, 124 and 140 for a score of 396.

On the men's side, the University of Victoria took home the team title with a score 848, finishing well ahead of second-place Lewis-Clark State, which had an 862.

Victoria's Todd Halpen won the event with a three-day total of 201. Mitchell Evanecz was second with a 208. Havre's Jason Johnstone finished in fifth place with a score of 213 for Montana Tech. Johnstone fired rounds of 70, 74 and 69. Brother Jon Johnstone fired a three-round total of 234. Havre's Trent Normandy finished just out of the top 10, firing a 225 for Miles Community College.

The Skylights will return to action on Monday when they travel to Billings for the Rocky Mountain Invitational.
