FRESNO
PACIFIC KEEPS WINNING: Fresno Pacific (8-0) has opened up the season
perfect and jumped to first in the first regular season NAIA Top 25 Poll
released on Sept. 6. National American, S.D. (9-0) moved up two spots to second
from its preseason number-four ranking. California Baptist (7-1), last year’s
NAIA national champion and 2005 preseason favorite, fell two spots to third
after losing to then-16th-ranked Cornerstone to open the season.
Columbia, Mo. (4-0) dropped peg to fourth, while Concordia, Calif. (9-0)
remained even at number five in the poll. Rounding out the top 10 are Madonna
(9-0) at six, St. Mary, Neb. (7-1) at seven, Southern Oregon (8-2) at eight,
Houston Baptist (7-0) at nine and Dickinson State (5-2) at
10.
THE POLL SHUFFLE:
Lubbock Christian (6-2), Missouri Baptist (4-1), St. Francis, Ill. (6-2),
Vanguard (8-0) and Hastings (9-1) all landed in the first regular season NAIA

against NCAA Division II teams at the West Texas A&M University
Invitational, including then-10th-ranked Fort Hays State. Missouri
Baptist defeated two teams receiving votes to open the season, and its only loss
is to seventh-ranked St. Mary, Neb. (7-1). St. Francis pulled out a three-game
victory over then-14th-ranked Iowa Wesleyan last week. Vanguard
defeated three NCAA Division II teams, in addition to
then-18th-ranked Texas Wesleyan. Hastings defeated NCAA Division II
Kentucky Wesleyan as part of nine wins in the first two
weeks.

AVCA SEARCHING FOR STORY IDEAS: The AVCA
produces a weekly CSTV/AVCA Facts on File National Volleyball Update for the
NAIA. However, the AVCA needs the help of coaches and sports information
directors to make this newsletter better. Please send any story or noteworthy
ideas, 30-kill performances, triple-doubles (involving kills, assists, blocks,
digs, aces) or 500 home crowds to the AVCA by e-mail (naia@avca.org) by fax to
719-576-7778. If your school produces weekly notes, the AVCA would also like to
receive that information.
750 A
GREAT PRESENT: Mount Vernon Nazarene Head Coach Paul Swanson reached
the 750-career-victory total the quickest way possible this season, and it
turned into a nice little birthday present. He entered the season with 737
victories, and his Lady Cougars have come through in each of the 13 matches this
season. On his 53rd birthday, Swanson recorded career-win 750 on
Sept. 3 as MVNU (13-0) defeated previously unbeaten Walsh University in the
championship match of the nine-team Roberts Wesleyan Invitational. Swanson holds
a career record of 750-267 in 23 years coaching at the NAIA level. He is 735-252
in 22 years leading the Lady Cougars volleyball team.
BLOCK THIS: Urbana junior
Mary Brunner turned in a spectacular weekend performance at the Earlham Quaker
Coca-Cola Classic. She earned most valuable player honors as she contributed 62
kills, 41 blocks, 18 digs and two aces. Brunner saved a record-setting
performance for the title match against Marian on Sept. 3. She produced a
school-record 17 blocks in the four-game match, which Urbana won 30-25, 20-30,
30-26, 30-19.
COLUMBIA
CLAIMS TITLE: Columbia, Mo. (4-0) won four matches to win its own
tournament, the Best Western/KMIZ Classic, on Sept. 2-3. The Cougars defeated
St. Francis (Ill.) and Culver-Stockton on the first day in sweeps, then blanked
Peru State and Illinois-Springfield on the second day.
