Skylight golfers finish sixth at Carroll invite

There is nothing like golf in the fall. The short days and
the long sleeves. The Montana State University-Northern golf team, battled the recent rough spate of weather to finish
sixth at the Carroll College Invitational held at the Green Meadow Country Club
on Monday and Tuesday in
After two rounds, the Skylights were challenging to move out of sixth and into
fifth, but a tough final round hurt their chances.
"We were ahead of Western for two rounds, but that last round was
tough," said head coach Warren Quick. "Sixth isn't bad, but Carroll
and
Northern was only able to take the minimum required four golfers to the
tourney. The Skylights were without Melanie Fee, who stayed home because of
family reasons.
"If we get that fifth golfer, it allows one of the other golfers to have
an off day and not hurt us," Quick said. "With only four, every
player's score counts for every round."
Julie Wagner and Chastity Wagner led the Skylights with three rounds in the low
90's. Julie Wagner, a former HHS standout, fired rounds of 93, 91, 91 for a total of 275. Chastity Wagner bounced back after an
opening round 97, to shoot 91, 91 for a total of 280.
"Julie and Chastity were very consistent
for us," Quick said. "We just need to shave a few strokes off and get
them consistently in the 80s."
Anita Strommen fired rounds of 101, 95 and a team-low
87 for a total of 283. Lorrie Keller finished with scores of 107, 109 and 115
for a total of 331.
"Anita is really starting play really well," Quick said. "Lorrie
had a tough last round. But overall I was pleased with how the girls competed.
It was tough conditions."
Indeed, Northern wasn't even able to complete its practice round on Sunday with
temperatures in the 40s and a steady downpour, limiting its time on the course.
Besides the frigid fall weather, Green Meadows had recently aerated its green,
making putting difficult.
"It was tough to get your ball to hold the putting line," Quick said.
"You pretty much just had to blast it up there."
Despite the less than optimal conditions, Quick was
proud of the way his players responded.
"They didn't complain," Quick said. "They just went out there
and competed hard. They realized that everybody had to play in the same
conditions."
Havre native Jon Johnstone had a solid showing for
Montana Tech with scores of 78, 76, 74 for a total of
228.
