David Ray’s Wrestling Update

Northern hosted
North Idaho College, the #1 ranked NJCAA team and narrowly won the dual.  Three falls by 133 Brian Luna, 157 Stryder Davis and HWT Chase Gormley gave the margin of victory a boost for Northern, in all the LIGHTS won 6 matches of the 10.   Northern looked flat at 141, 149 and 174 and only winning one of the three, weights the coaching staff felt very confident that Northern could win.  The LIGHTS had a better performance at the National Duals in Cleveland, Ohio on Sunday, January 23rd even though losing two duals.  The crowd was great prior to the NIC and Northern Dual; Havre High School took on large class AA CMR High School and won soundly something like 50-19.  Having the high school and college compete together boost the attendance will over 1000.  It would be nice to have our entire home event scheduled together.

In the NAIA National Duals the LIGHTS finished 2nd in team standings yet winning only one dual and losing.   #1 Lindenwood University took 1st going 3-0 and winning 20 of their 30 matches, #2 Northern won 15 out of 30, #7 Cumberland College won 13 out of 30 and #3 Missouri Valley College won 11 out of 30.  I have to say that Missouri Valley with two starters out and Northern with Jesse Juarez out were not at full strength, the other two teams were healthy.  If Jesse could have competed Northern could have won all three matches at 184 and accumulated a total of 18 wins and taking one away from Lindenwood leaving them with 19 wins.  Northern and Lindenwood each had 3 individuals go undefeated, Missouri Valley had two and Cumberland College with one, Jesse would have given Northern 4.  The National Tournament is going to be very balanced and the team with the most depth (possible All-Americans) should win.  Northern needs Dan Shaw, Ryan Mattingly and Dale Seley to be on the award stands to give Northern a shot at the title.

MSU-Northern’s next test may big the biggest of the season as the LIGHTS travel to Boise, Idaho to dual NCAA Division I Cal State Fullerton and Boise State University on Sunday, January 30th at 1:00 pm and 2:30 pm.  This will bring an end to the toughest 7 day dual schedule of the season.
