Lady Argos, Western earn Frontier victories

The University of Great Falls volleyball team earned its first Frontier Conference victory of the season Friday night at McLaughlin Center.

Coach Dick Scott's Lady Argos trounced Westminster College in three straight games as they improved to 1-3 in league play, 4-14 overall. Westminster, with no seniors and seven freshmen on the roster, dropped to 0-5 in Frontier matches, 1-16 overall.

The Lady Argos got out of the blocks fast, going up 17-7. Then they went on a 7-1 run and they eventually coasted to a 30-16 victory.

UGF followed that easy victory with two tougher games, winning by 30-26 and 30-24.

Stephanie Smith and Mellany Dochylos led the attack with a combined 22 kills. Ashley Zerr-Smith contributed 30 assists, and Zerr-Smith, Jaclyn Bird and Deidre Ranf each had two service aces.

Denise McClain had 11 of the team's 35 digs, and Ranf had three solo blocks and two assists.

UGF is home tonight at 7 against UM-Western, which played Friday at MSU-Northern.

Westminster is in Havre tonight to face the Northern Skylights.

Western tops Northern

HAVRE -- UM-Western downed MSU-Northern 15-4 in the fifth game Friday night to claim a Frontier Conference volleyball victory.

Western improved to 2-3 in league play, 6-10 overall. Northern is 1-3, 8-9.

Emily Smith and Kasey Smith split up 31 kills for the Lady Bulldogs, who play at niversity of Great Falls tonight.

Linday Garcia had 17 kills and Mitsu Phillips 15 for Northern, which is home tonight against Westminster.
