MSU-Northern Wrestling
David Ray’s Weekly Report
The dual was build to be a test for MSU-Northern Wrestling
and it didn't fail. Northern lost to a
NCAA Division I top 25 team 13-22 and had its chances in winning but could not
capitalize in the bottom position and score the escape points. Northern fail 6 points behind quickley when
125 lber Jason Harrington was pinned from a headlock in the first period. At 133 senior Caleb Schaeffer did not
wrestle with the passion it takes to defeat opponents like Scott Jorgensen
losing 5-0. Freshman Chris Smith at 141
battled senior Jesse Brock in a tough match but could not keep up the physical
pace and loss a heartbreaker 9-6.
Anthony Haukenberry at 149 took on Great Falls hometown favorite Nick
Budeski winning 4-1, Stryder Davis loss another heartbreaker at 157 3-2, all he
needed to do was get an escape for a win or tie.
"Tough riding or not enough preparation on bottom made the
difference in two matches that Northern could have easily won and won the dual
19-16 but it was not to be, at least tonight."
Jesse Juarez at 174 loss in over-time 5-3, it was a nail bitter,
but it also was a match we should have won before the over-time if we were more
prepared on bottom. Kyle Fisher scored
a major with an 8-0 win, he looked the best he has all season, Emmett Willson
followed with an 9-3 decision over the best wrestler on the Boise team. Mazi Burke wrestled heavyweight giving up 60
pounds, it was an exciting match with 25 seconds left and behind 7-5, Mazi
escaped and got a takedown in about seven seconds going out of bounds. With 18 seconds left and Mazi ahead 8-7, all
he needed to do was ride the big guy out, it felt more like 18 minutes at the
end of the match and 18 seconds later Mazi was still on top and victorious.
Northern won four matches of the ten
but learned a lot and took some lessons in where to improve for our goal this
February 27-28.
Northern's next home dual is this
Thursday, January 29th against Western Wyoming College followed by North Idaho
College on Friday, January 30th.
February 5th in Bismarck, ND against the U. of Mary closes the regular
season before regionals in Havre on February 14th.
I forgot to mention the U. of
Calgary did not make it to Havre on Saturday due to weather and road
conditions.
