Mar. 30, 2005 Lights wrestling hosts banquet

Fans of the Montana State University-Northern wrestling team are invited to the annual senior wrestling banquet. The night is a celebration and the opportunity to reflect on this year's past performances and to celebrate the team's accomplishments for 2005.

Mar. 7, 2005 Three win titles, but Lights finish without trophy
The 15-hour drive home from Sioux City, Iowa, might have been a little bit easier for the members of the Montana State University-Northern wrestling team if there was a trophy from the 2005 NAIA national wrestling tournament riding in the van with them.  Instead, the Lights have only individual hardware to show from this weekend's national tournament, having finished fourth as a team with 111 points.

Mar. 4, 2005 Northern wrestlers begin defense of title
It doesn't seem like that long ago that head coach David Ray and his Montana State University-Northern wrestling team were lifting the 2004 NAIA national championship trophy above their heads in celebration at the Great Falls High Field House.  It certainly doesn't feel like a year.  My, how time flies when you are defending a national championship.

Feb. 22, 2005 Northern wrestlers continue dominance at Northern Regional
The MSU-Northern wrestling team continued its dominance over the NAIA Northern Regional tournament with yet another dominant showing in Huron, S.D.  The Lights had seven wrestlers win individual titles and two others finish second to propel them to 170 team points and their eighth straight team title.  "We really emphasized how important it was to dominate each individual weight class and finish as high as we could for seeding at the national tournament," said Lights' head coach David Ray. "If we did that, we knew the team title would take care of itself."

Feb. 21, 2005 Lights win 8th straight regional title

Feb. 18, 2005 Lights look for eighth straight regional title
The NAIA Northern Regional Wrestling tournament might as well rename itself the MSU-Northern Regional wrestling tournament.  The Lights have absolutely dominated the event in recent years, winning the last seven tournaments in a row and 11 of the last 12.

Feb. 10, 2005 Lights crush Argos to complete season sweep
Any hopes that University of Great Falls wrestling team may have had about upsetting the MSU-Northern wrestling team or even winning a few matches remained just that - hopes.  The Lights dominated their fledgling rival Wednesday night, winning all but one match in a 44-3 rout in the final home wrestling action of the season at the MSU-Northern gymnasium.

Feb. 9, 2005 Lights face UGF in final home action of season
You really can't call it an official rivalry yet. The Montana University-Northern and University of Great Falls' wrestling teams have had exactly one dual - a very lopsided one at that.  A rivalry: technically is supposed to be closer and take place over a longer period of time. Hopefully, Northern and UGF will get to that point, but for now they are just in the budding stage.

Feb. 1, 2005 NCAA Division I schools knock off Lights
Sometimes it seems as if the words: "NCAA Division I" can be a little intimidating for NAIA schools and athletes going up against schools with that affiliation.  It's tough to forget about that little moniker, no matter how hard you try. And it even affects dominant NAIA programs like the MSU-Northern wrestling team.  The Lights were beaten by a pair of NCAA Division I schools on Sunday in Boise, Idaho.

Jan. 28, 2005 David Ray's Wrestling Update

Jan. 28, 2005 Pins carry MSU-Northern past North Idaho
It's tough to argue with the scoreboard, but if anyone could win that argument it would be MSU-Northern wrestling coach David Ray.  Despite his team putting a solid 28-14 beating on the North Idaho Cardinals on Thursday night at a packed MSU-Northern gym, Ray was far from pleased with how his team performed.

Jan. 27, 2005 Lights host North Idaho College
After a trip to scenic Cleveland in January, the Hi-Line seems like a tropical paradise for the Montana State University-Northern wrestling team.  The Lights gladly return to home to the friendly confines of the MSU-Northern gym for a special night of wrestling, following Sunday's NWCA Cliff Keen National Duals in Cleveland.

Jan. 25, 2005 Lights finish 1-2 at NAIA national duals
The Montana State University-Northern wrestling team wasn't on a field trip when it went to Cleveland on Sunday for the Cliff Keen NWCA NAIA duals, but it was certainly educational.  The No. 2-ranked Lights finished 1-2 in three duals against nationally-ranked opponents and saw first hand the competition they will face in March at the NAIA national tournament in Sioux City, Iowa.

Jan. 21, 2005 Lights dominate UGF, prepare for NAIA national duals
Montana State University-Northern wrestling coach David Ray wouldn't admit, at least on the record anyway, but he wanted to win all 10 of the matches of Thursday night's dual with the University of Great Falls.  It's his nature. Ray doesn't just want to win, he wants to dominate. And for the most part, his Lights squad responded with a sound 39-6 beating of upstart UGF.

Jan. 21, 2005 MSU-N vs. UGF Dual Report

Jan. 20, 2005 The birth of a wrestling rivalry
It's been close to 10 years since a pair of Montana colleges squared off a wrestling match in dual action.  Tonight, that depressing streak will come to an end as the Montana State University-Northern wrestling team will travel to Great Falls to take on the upstart University of Great Falls Argos at 8 p.m. at the McLaughlin Center on the UGF campus.

Jan. 17, 2005 Lights have little trouble with Northwest College
Just over a month ago, the Montana State University-Northern wrestling team scraped out a 22-18 dual win over the Northwest College Trappers in Havre.  Thursday night in Powell, Wyo., the only scraping the Lights did was on the windshield of their van, following a 43-6 win over Northwest.

Lights waste little time with Marauders
It wasn't quite quick enough to leave your vehicle running the whole time, but it didn't make much longer than that for the Montana State University-Northern wrestling team to dispatch with the University of Mary on Wednesday night at the MSU-Northern gymnasium.  The Lights crushed the Marauders, 41-6, losing just two matches and basically dominating throughout.

Lights host University of Mary in dual action
Dual matches in wrestling aren't the same as other sporting events like basketball, football or baseball.  Because the overall outcome still comes down to individual matches, it's much easier to predict winners of duals.  That being said, Montana State University-Northern wrestling coach David Ray isn't being cocky or overconfident when he admits that it's not whether or not his team will win its dual tonight against the University of Mary or the one tomorrow against Northwest College, it's by how much.

Jan. 11, 2005 Lights dominate DSU Open Classic
It would have been easy for the coaches and wrestlers of the teams attending this past weekend's Dickinson State Open Classic to think that maybe the Montana State University-Northern wrestling team was down.  After all it has been a somewhat tumultuous season so far. After graduating three national champs, the Lights also lost a pair of varsity starters after they were dismissed from the team. Add the fact that the host Bluehawks had already beaten the Lights in dual action season, and it isn't exactly positive.

Jan. 7, 2005 Lights return to action at Dickinson Open Wrestling Classic

It wasn't the best December for Montana State University-Northern wrestling coach David Ray, and January isn't starting off so great either.  Ray and the Lights were supposed to be in dual action tonight in Dickinson, N.D. as a sort of a warm-up for Saturday's Dickinson Open Wrestling Classic. However, none of the teams attending the tournament wanted to dual the defending NAIA champs as of Thursday, leaving the Lights as spectators tonight.

Dec. 10, 2004 Lights edge Northwest College
There is no such thing as winning pretty in wrestling, but there is such a thing as winning ugly, which is exactly what the Montana State University-Northern wrestling team did Thursday night.  The Lights overcame a pair of early pins and two tough one-point losses to defeat the Northwest College Trappers, 22-18, in dual action at the MSU-Northern gymnasium.

Dec. 7, 2004 Lights sweep duals; Davis second in Las Vegas
It wasn't a recipe for disaster, but it did have the ingredients for at least a possible loss. Instead, it may have been a turning point in the season for the Montana State University-Northern wrestling team.

Dec. 6, 2004 David Ray's Wrestling Update

Nov. 24, 2004 Bluehawks bring the heat against Lights
After his team's performance Wednesday night, Montana State University-Northern wrestling coach David Ray is rethinking his team's wrestling posters. Specifically, the slogan on posters, which reads, "Bringing the Heat."  The Lights surrendered its first home dual loss to a non-NCAA Division I opponent since the 1995 season as the Dickinson State University Bluehawks swooped into the MSU-Northern gymnasium and snatched a 24-17 victory from a flat Lights' squad.

Nov 23, 2004  Lights/Bluehawk Dual Results

Nov 23, 2004 Lights host Bluehawks in dual
It's not a jealousy based on envy, but rather based on respect. The Montana State University-Northern wrestling team is the posterboard for success in NAIA wrestling, and Dickinson State University wants to emulate that same type of success. The two squads will meet tonight in dual action at the MSU-Northern gym at 7 p.m.

Nov 16, 2004 Lights take three titles at Cowboy Open
In 32 years of its existence, Sunday's annual University of Wyoming Cowboy Open wrestling tournament was one of the largest with 16 teams and over 400 wrestlers competing.  Fortunately, the vast amount of competition brought out the best in the Montana State University-Northern wrestling team.  The Lights had their best showing at the Cowboy in the open division with seven wrestlers placing in the top four, including three individual champs.

Nov 12, 2004 Lights faced raised level of competition at NCAA Division I-laden Cowboy Open
With each passing week, the level of competition that the Montana State University-Northern wrestling team faces grows a little tougher. This weekend will be no different as the Lights head to the University of Wyoming's Cowboy Open invitational wrestling tournament on Sunday.

Nov. 9, 2004 Northern wrestlers impressive in Wyoming over the weekend
A weekend that should have been filled with positives was marred a little with one negative for Montana State University-Northern wrestling coach David Ray.  For the first time in 12 years at Northern, Ray had a pair of wrestlers fail to make weight at a weigh-in. While the absences of the two wrestlers didn't stop Northern from winning its two duals against Western Wyoming College and Si-Tanka Huron on Friday in Cody, Wyo., Ray was still annoyed.

Nov. 5, 2004 Northern wrestlers open season in Wyoming with duals; tourney

This time it's for real. This isn't an exhibition match against a Canadian opponent, a former Lights wrestler or a current Lights wrestler.  Nope, this time it counts for real.
The Montana State University-Northern wrestling team opens its official regular season tonight at 5 p.m. when it faces Western Wyoming College in Cody, Wyo. The Lights will follow that up with another dual against Si-Tanka Huron University at 6:30 p.m.

Oct. 29, 2004 Scrimmage shows wrestling team has depth
There was one thing that was abundantly clear to Montana State University-Northern head wrestling coach David Ray at the end of Thursday night's Maroon and Gold scrimmage at the MSU-Northern Fieldhouse: His team has a tremendous amount of depth.  Despite suffering a couple of key losses to graduation last season, including national wrestler of the year Emmett Willson and national champion Kyle Fischer, it appears that Ray has reloaded his team with some very talented young wrestlers to go along with a solid group of returning national champions.

Oct. 28, 2004 Lights host Maroon-Gold intrasquad dual
It may be an intrasquad dual, but any time you take to the mat for the Montana State University-Northern wrestling team, certain things are expected, specifically wrestling to win.  It doesn't matter if you're wrestling your teammate, your brother or even your mother.  The defending NAIA national champions will face some solid competition, when they take on, well, the Lights in the annual Maroon-Gold dual tonight at 7 at the MSU-Northern gymnasium.

Oct. 25, 2004 Lights roll University of Calgary, fall to talented alumni squad

There was slight difference in competition for the Montana State University-Northern this weekend.  On Friday night, the Lights manhandled and mangled the University of Calgary 29-6 to open their 2004 season. However, Saturday night the competition had a familiar look with an unfamiliar result as a team of Northern alumni defeated its younger cohorts 37-25.

Oct 22, 2004 Northern wrestlers begin defense of national title with home duals
The Montana State University-Northern wrestling team will begin defense of its 2003-04 NAIA national title on Friday night when it faces the University of Calgary in its first dual match of the season.  The defending champs will follow that up with a dual against, well, a bunch of former national champs, as Northern will hold its annual alumni dual on Saturday night.
