Lights football turned a major corner in 2005
It may seem to many that the Montana State
University-Northern football team has been in a rebuilding mode
since the program was reinstated nearly eight years ago.
However, after a 5-5 season and a solo third-place finish in the
2005 Frontier Conference standings, it is clear that the Lights have
finally arrived as a team that needs to be dealt with on the NAIA
football landscape.

Lights well represented on Frontier All-Conference team
With Carroll College claiming its fourth straight NAIA
national championship last Saturday in Savannah, Tenn., the 2005
Frontier Conference football awards were finally announced Tuesday
afternoon. The Montana State University-Northern Lights had 10
players named to the all-conference team this season, including
three first-teamers.

Lights fall short against Tech, finish 5-5
The Wind Bowl. That is what Saturday's Frontier Conference football game
between Montana State University-Northern and Montana Tech at Blue Pony
Stadium in Havre could be aptly named.
Rarely has a football game been so affected by the wind. The 50 mph gusts
coming from the west wreaked havoc all day long, and a game that started
with high hopes ended in a disappointing 34-24 loss for MSU-N.

Lights host Orediggers in season finale
To say that Saturday's game between Montana State University-Northern
and Montana Tech is a landmark football game might be pushing it just a
little. But if the Lights should earn a Frontier Conference football victory
over the No. 15 Orediggers at Blue Pony Stadium, it will certainly be a
landmark win at the end of a landmark season.

Lights clip Rocky Mountain College on the road
Montana State University-Northern won one on the road Saturday afternoon
against Rocky Mountain College - and it was quite a football milestone.
The Lights, in beating the Bears 21-9 at Herb Klindt Field, prevailed in a
game away from Havre for the first time in more than two years, and the
victory in Billings was Northern's first since 1968.

Lights seek to end road woes at Rocky
Reaching the NAIA playoffs will not happen this season and neither will
winning the Frontier Conference championship. But that doesn't mean the
Montana State University-Northern football team doesn't have a lot riding on
the rest of its regular season.

and sometimes it seems to happen overnight. Three weeks ago the
Montana State University-Northern Lights struggled in a close loss at

Montana State University-Northern head football coach
Mark Samson said he was looking for some consistency out of his team

domination from beginning to end in a 37-19 Frontier Conference win
over Western at Blue Pony Stadium in Havre.

Lights on the road at Montana Tech
The Montana State University-Northern football team has proven many
things this season. The Lights have proven that they are much better
than last year. They have proven that they can play with any team
with the conference. They have proven that their first win of the
season wasn't a fluke with a win last weekend.

Pretty is a word that shouldn't be used in football. It's a word for cheerleaders. It certainly wouldn't be used to describe the Montana State University-Northern football team's 21-16 win over the Rocky Mountain College Battlin' Bears on Saturday at Blue Pony Stadium.

Lights host Bears for homecoming
The compliments are nice, but in head coach Mark Samson's mind, his team hasn't proven a thing this season. Sure, the Lights are better, but after going 1-10 a year ago, they were bound to be better. Samson doesn't simply want more from his players, frankly, he expects it. Northern will host the Rocky Mountain College Battlin' Bears at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Blue Pony Stadium in its first conference home game of the season. [Complete Story] |

Carroll capitalizes on Northern mistakes
To beat the Carroll College football team, you don't need to be perfect, but
you have to be pretty close. Unfortunately, for the Montana State
University-Northern football team, there was no perfection Saturday at
Nelson Stadium in Helena. The Lights played unquestionably better
against the juggernaut Saints than they did last year. However, missed
opportunities and mistakes cost them a chance for pulling off the upset in a
31-14 loss.

UM-W edges Lights in Frontier shootout
Mark
Samson wants no part of moral victories. In his second year as the Montana
State University-Northern head football coach, Samson ranks them up there
with dropped passes and missed tackles - unacceptable. So don't think
for a second he is taking much solace in his team's 34-33 loss to the
University of Montana-Western Bulldogs on Saturday in Dillon. There is
little comfort for just playing a team close.

The Montana State University-Northern football team would love to start the

the Lights program since its reinstatement in 1993.

The bad thing about intrasquad scrimmages is that if you are really pleased

Montana State University-Northern football coach Mark Samson was beyond
pleased with the performance of his young defense in the first scrimmage of
the fall season Friday. Consequently, he will be the first to admit his
first-team offense didn't have one of its better performances.

Ophus a hint of anything without great sarcasm. At 6-4, 270 pounds, the
former Big Sandy star is ominous presence that Samson can't wait to see in a
Lights' uniform.
