Dr. Rolf Groseth Appointed Interim Chancellor
Winter 2008

Rolf Groseth

Montana State University President Geoff Gamble has appointed Rolf Groseth, MSU-Bozeman's vice president of inter campus affairs, as the interim chancellor at MSU-Northern. He began his duties January 1. Groseth replaces Alex Capdeville, who announced his retirement as the CEO of the Havre campus.

Gamble said he selected Groseth because he has been actively involved in a broad spectrum of issues that confront the MSU campuses, particularly MSU-Northern. "Rolf, better than most anyone else, is in the best position to link the MSU-Northern resources with those on the other MSU campuses," said Gamble. He added that Groseth has been involved with the MSU-Northern campus for years.

Groseth's familiarity with the area will be important as MSU-Northern faces several challenges, chiefly declining enrollment and resulting revenue loss, Gamble said. He added that Groseth will remain the interim chancellor for the Havre campus until the Northern campus achieves stability with its budget and programs. "At that time we will conduct a national search for the permanent chancellor."

Groseth has worked at MSU since 1977 when he was hired as the director of Student Activities for the Bozeman campus. The Chicago area native has a bachelor's degree from Michigan State University where he was also an All American in swimming. He earned his master's degree from Iowa State University and his doctorate from the University of Florida. Groseth has served in a variety of positions at MSU including dean of students, vice provost for students affairs, executive assistant to the president, and the MSU System coordinator. Groseth is married to Jaynee Drange Groseth, executive director of the MSU Alumni Association.
