Health Profession Center Named for Martha Anne Dow
Winter 2008

Dr. Martha Anne Dow has received the honor of having a new building at the Oregon Institute of Technology named after her on September 11, 2007. The building is called the Martha Anne Dow Center for Health Professions. Dr. Dow earned her Bachelor's degree in 1961 at NMC and her Master's degree in 1969 from MSU. She received a PhD from the University of Hawaii in 1986. Dr. Dow began with Northern Montana College in 1969 as a part time instructor. She went on to become an Instructor in Microbiology and Director of the Water/Wastewater Project in 1976. Dr. Dow was instrumental in getting the Water Quality Program going at Northern. She continued at NMC through the years moving through the ranks from Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, to Professor and to Chair of the Science & Mathematics Department. In March of 1990 she was appointed Vice President for Academic Affairs at NMC. Dr. Dow left NMC in August of 1992 to assume the position of Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs at Oregon Institute of Technology in Klamath Falls. Oregon. She was named President of OIT in May of 1998.

Dr. Dow was a microbiologist by training and stated she choose that profession because biologists had to draw their specimens. She could manage the squiggles and other shapes of microorganisms, but could not manage drawings of other life forms. Martha had longed to be an engineer, but was told that was not a profession for women.

This is from the Herald and News 9/12/07 in Klamath Falls, Oregon.
