MSU-Northern's Educational Opportunity Center (EOC)
Reaches Out Successfully

Winter 2004

The Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) is a free educational outreach program, federally funded by the U.S. Department of Education, counseling individuals who wish to continue their education at either the high school or college level. Site coordinators provide academic information, career exploration, guidance and assistance in decision making, filling out forms, and getting connected to the support systems available. It is the only EOC in Montana.

Last year, the EOC exceeded its goals, recruiting and serving more than 3,000 participants, 54% of which were Native Americans. They provided career services to 69%, admissions assistance to 88%, and financial aid assistance to 94%. They distributed flyers and brochures to 393 agencies and businesses in 53 communities throughout the State of Montana and coordinated delivery of services with 246 agencies.

Director of EOC, Eleanor Martin says, "We have a phenomenal, dedicated staff that believes in the program and who continually strive to enhance the quality of the delivery of services. We are always looking for new ways to coordinate with other agencies and provide outreach services to people who don't have access. The excellence of our professional staff and quality of our program really speaks for itself."

The EOC is geared toward low income, first generation and Native American students. However, EOC services are free and available to everyone. There are 11 sites in the state of Montana; Billings, Browning, Butte, Fort Belknap, Fort Peck, Great Falls, Havre, Helena, Kalispell, Rocky Boy, and Salish Kootenai College.
