In 1955 Montana Historical Society director K. Ross Toole lauded the Society's journal, "Montana The Magazine of Western History". "It is the only magazine dedicated to the proposition that authentically written history is a saleable commodity," he wrote.. "It took this magazine to prove that the truth is better than fiction and that footnotes needn't bleed history of its substance and drama. " Today, as "Montana The Magazine of Western History" celebrates its fiftieth anniversary, the Society proudly stands by Toole's 1955 characterization of its magazine and by its commitment to publishing authentically written, well-documented history that appeals to an audience of scholars and laypeople alike. Widely recognized as one of the finest historical journals of its kind in the nation, "Montana The Magazine of Western History" continues to be a pace-setter in format, design, content, illustration, and general presentation of historical information. Today, the magazine, which has won numerous national awards over the years, from organizations such as the National Cowboy Hall of Fame and the Western History Association, circulates in all fifty states and fifteen foreign countries. The Montana Historical Society will mark the fiftieth anniversary of "Montana The Magazine of Western History" with special features in the magazine reflecting on the magazine's history and the changes the last fifty years have brought to Montana and the West. "Montana The Magazine of Western History" will be printing portions of Northern 's history publication, "A Northern Reflection."
