MSU-Northern Grad is First Female Native American Officer
Summer 2007
 

In ceremonies in at the Blackfeet Community College in Browning, Montana, 2nd Lieutenant, Amber Gopher took the commissioning oath and became the first Native American female to be a commissioned officer for the Montana Air National Guard's 120th Fighter Wing. Blackfeet tribal leaders, the state's top military brass, tribal veterans in eagle feather war bonnets, and hundreds of spectators were present as she was sworn in by 1st Lieutenant, Carla Lott who is the first Native American female commissioned officer in the Montana Army National Guard.

 

Both are members of the Blackfeet tribe and members of families with rich military histories. Tribal spiritual leaders presented her with her great grandmother's name, "Good Victory." Amber is a 2006 graduate of the MSU-Northern bachelor's program in nursing. Amber joined the Guard in 2001.
