Northern Alumni in the News
Summer 2006

Respected Northern Professor and alumni, William Thackeray, '58, has retired from MSU Northern. Professor Bill Thackeray taught history, English and philosophy at the college for more than 40 years. Friends and coworkers describe him as a consummate lecturer and storyteller; a kind of man with extensive knowledge of literature, history of the American west, Native American History, law and literature.

Thackeray has witnessed a number of changes at Northern including the change from an independent institution to a part of the Montana State University system. He began the Native American studies program in the 1960's and has been involved with the Montana Committee for the Humanities for many years. He started teaching Native American literature when he could only find four universities through out the country teaching the same subject. Thackeray also started the philosophy program at MSU-N, but with budget cuts both the Native American studies and philosophy programs have been cut back.

Thackeray plans to spend his retirement traveling and writing. His third book, "Bound for the Bullhook Bottoms" is due out soon.
