Alumni Scholarship Winners
Summer 2005

Hardin High School senior, Michael Chavez, and Havre High School senior, Briana McLain, have been selected to receive the Northern Alumni Association Keith Clawson Memorial Scholarships for incoming freshmen. Two $750 endowed scholarships are awarded each year to sons or daughters of alumni by the Northern Alumni Association in memory of former College administrator Keith Clawson. These were awarded along with thirteen other alumni scholarships to students of Montana State University Northern at the annual Scholarship Awards Convocation Friday, April 8, 2005 in the Student Union Building.

Michael Chavez, is an outstanding student athlete who will graduate from Hardin High School on May 29, 2005. Chavez was consistently in the A Honor Roll in both high school and junior high, as well as an Academic All-State athlete and an All-Conference Honorable Mention at cornerback in football. A member of F.F.A. (Future Farmers of America), he has participated in numerous community service projects including putting up flags before school on national holidays and clearing a field for a local resident. He was also employed by the Hardin Schools in the summer maintenance department doing seasonal work. He will major in the Civil Engineering program and play football for the Lights. His mother, Barbara Hammett, is an '83 graduate of the Drafting Technology program.

Briana McLain will graduate from Havre High School on May 22, 2005 with plans to major in biology at MSU-Northern. Her future plans include attending the Washington State University School of Veterinary Medicine in Pullman, Washington. Briana is an honor roll student at Havre High School and has taken several college prep and advanced classes in math, science and art. Her interests are in animal care and welfare, art and music, and cooking. Briana participated in band and art during her high school career, which included schools in San Juan, California and Puyallup, Washington. She is the daughter of Kay Kickbusch McLain, a '97 graduate of MSU-Northern with a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and a minor in French.

The recipient of the Keith Clawson Memorial Continuing Student Scholarship is Kasey Barsotti, of Havre, Montana. Wendi Hulett of Havre was awarded the Keith Clawson Memorial Non-Traditional Student Scholarship. Hulett is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. The Keith Clawson Memorial Single Parent Scholarship was awarded to Anita R. Strommen of Hinsdale, Montana. Strommen is majoring in English. The Class of 1941 Endowed Scholarship recipient is Lisa Marie Larson of Havre. An Elementary Education major, Larson is the granddaughter of Rosemary (Watters) `41 and Henry Hamblock. The Northern Alumni Association Fine Arts Scholarship was awarded to Jennifer Gorder, a Graphic Design student from Havre.

Each year the Northern Alumni Association awards a $750 scholarship designated for Montana student athletes to each athletic program. The coaches award these scholarships. The Rodeo Scholarship is awarded to Morgan Strauser of Chinook, Ryan Hamilton of Twin Bridges, and Bobby Kittson of Helena. The Skylights Volleyball award went to Tera O'Haire of Vaughn. The Light's Basketball award went to Cody Gillespie of Great Falls and the Skylight's Basketball award went to Jena Heggen of Winifred, Kristie Pullin of Box Elder, and Michelle Van Dyke of Chester. The Golf Scholarship was awarded to Julie Wagner of Havre and the Light's Wrestling award went to Nick Budeski of Great Falls. The Light's Football scholarship was awarded to Mike Chaves of Hardin, Nick Walters of Florence, and Ted Wells of Havre.
