New Tuition and Fees Explained
Spring 2003

On May 29, 2003 the Montana University System's Board of Regent's voted to drop last year's tuition surcharge in favor of a tuition increase for each of the campuses of the Montana University System.

MSU-Northern's tuition increase will actually represent a $6.50 reduction in fees for lower division, (which are students that have accumulated less than 60 credits) over last year's tuition surcharge. Upper division (60+ credits) and graduate students will pay $27.16 more in tuition over last year. These figures are based on a full time student taking 15 credits.

The Board of Regents also approved three new mandatory fees: the information technology infrastructure fee ($45.60/semester), which will be used to maintain and replace Northern's computing and networking systems; the library fee ($10/semester); and the academic facilities fee ($36/semester), which will allow us to transform 3-4 classrooms every year into state of the art learning centers. All other mandatory fees remain the same as last year. Several miscellaneous and course fee changes were also approved to cover additional costs related to distance delivery, graduate cohorts, eCollege courses and other activities.

The fees were supported and encouraged by the Northern students. Interim Student Body President Jacob Lorang commented "These fees were vital to maintaining the quality of education that students have come to expect from Northern."

This fall a lower division full time student on the Havre campus can expect to pay $1,747 per semester (tuition and fees) as opposed to last year's rate of $1,662. Students taking courses by distance or at a satellite campus like Great Falls can expect to see an increase in their distance delivery fee. Fees will also vary based on credit load, residency status or course requirements. The new fees will go into effect this summer and the new tuition rates will go into effect this fall.

Chancellor Alex Capdeville explains, "There are a lot of exciting things happening on the Northern campus. Our new Applied Technology Center is in the final stages of planning. We are starting to see some of our roads repaired and the new heating/airconditioning system is being installed in Cowan Hall. We are also continuing to make progress in our master planning process, which is helping us to focus our resources on areas which will position Northern to succeed in the future."
