Thanks to GE Transportation Systems, students at Montana State University-Northern will now be able to practice their skills on a cutaway of a sixteen cylinder, 4,400 horsepower, 7FDL16 diesel locomotive engine.

"This engine will provide students with -valuable hands-on training and experience," says Greg Clouse, a diesel technology professor at MSU-Northern. Students will check timing, complete tune-ups, and replace cylinders, bearings, and other engine components. Clouse says MSU-Northern professors will use the engine throughout the entire diesel technology curriculum.

"The donation of the engine really solidifies our win-win relationship with GE Transportation," says Clouse. As part of a mutually beneficial relationship between MSU-Northern and GE Transportation, the corporation provides MSU-Northern with engine manuals, training videos, tools, and other valuable materials. In turn, MSU-Northern supplies GE Transportation with trained graduates. "Each year, GE gives MSU-Northern students cooperative education placements that often turn into career opportunities," says Gail Reynolds, director of the Career Center at MSU-Northern.
