Students Challenge MSU-Northern Computer Course

When Big Sandy and KG students visited Montana State University-Northern Tuesday to take a Computer Concepts Test, they also toured campus and saw MSU-Northern NorthNet facilities and computer labs. Students who pass the test may earn three Computer Information Systems credits from MSU-Northern.

Roger Stone, Computer Information Systems Professor at MSU-Northern, explains that the annual test measures students' computer literacy and gives them an opportunity to assess their knowledge. "The percentage of those who pass the test has improved through the years," says Stone. "It has becomes a bit of a competition. Also, teachers are working to prepare students for the challenge." Big Sandy Computer and Science Teacher Cindy Pokorny says that her students worked hard to prepare for the test. "We spend about three fourths of our time on the computer and about one fourth on computer concepts."

Besides taking the test, the students enjoyed a meal at the Northern Grille, met Vice Chancellor Roger Barber, and toured the MSU-Northern campus. On their tour, the students attended a demonstration of NorthNet, MSU-Northern's interactive television system, saw computer labs in Brockmann Center and Cowan Hall, and were introduced to MSU-Northern's Student Support Center with its academic counseling and personal, walk-in tutoring in English, math, computers, science, and other subjects.

When asked about their experience, students reported that they liked viewing the campus as well as having an opportunity to obtain college credits.  “I enjoyed the tour,” said Big Sandy student Amber Andrade.  “This is an extremely pretty campus.”  Mary Cross, also from Big Sandy, said she appreciated and introduction to MSU-Northern, where she may be taking summer classes.
