Basketball
The Skylights finished
regular season play with a 25-2 record and were ranked 7th in the nation
in the final standings. They secured their 11th straight Frontier
Conference title with an 81-77 win over Carroll College on February 6th.
They then lost to Carroll in the Pacific West Regional Playoff Game in
Havre on March 5th. Despite this setback the team advanced to the
NAIA National Championships where they beat Lee University (Tennessee)
79-58 and Central State University (Ohio) 64-45 before losing 79-59 to
top seeded Southern Nazarene (Oklahoma) in the quarter finals. This
marks the first time the Skylights have ever advanced to the third round
of the national tournament. They ended the year with a tremendous
27-4 record overall.
The Northern Lights
finished their regular season with a 13-18 record.
Wrestling
The Lights dominated Dickinson State University
with a 33-9 win in their last regular season home dual on February 7th.
They then went on to excel at the seven team Great Plains Regional in Havre
on March 6th. After that it was on to the 1999 NAIA National Championships
March 19-20 in St. Charles Missouri, where the Lights turned in their 4th
straight National title with 151.5 points. 197 pounder turk Lords
and 174 pounder Mark Lane were both national champions, while heavyweight
Damion Martindale, 125 pound Travis Rollins and 184 pound Tyson Thrivierge
all boasted third place efforts. Lights wrestling coach David Ray
was named NAIA Wrestling Coach of the Year.
