Service

Your Northern Alumni Association and MSU-Northern Foundation are organizations dedicated to serving the University and its community.

Our intention is inclusive, not exclusive. All men and women who have completed a certificate, associate's, bachelor's or master's degrees, or who are members or former members of the University faculty or administration or who have contributed funds to the Alumni Association are considered members. All alumni and friends who have gifted money, equipment or in-kind services to the University or who have established endowments or planned giving programs are considered members of the MSU-Northern Foundation.

"Alumni Association and Foundation projects and activities are designed to share University resources with alumni and the community, fostering school spirit and loyalty, maintaining alumni involvement, celebrating alumni excellence and promoting the continued well-being of MSU-Northern.

The Alumni Association, under the direction of an elected Executive Council, and the MSU-Northern Foundation Board of Directors raise thousands of dollars each year to support scholarships, and outreach and enrichment projects.

The Alumni Association and Foundation comprise a powerful lobbying network of over 16,000 members that helps develop and evaluate educational programs, promotes scholarship, and gives voice to the role, scope and mission of MSU-Northern as a strong and viable member of the Montana University System.

Developing and continuing our campus heritage is a primary focus of the Northern Alumni Association. The Alumni Executive Council works with students, faculty members and administrators in organizing Homecoming, Founders' Day and Reunions to involve and recognize alumni and friends.

During Commencement weekend the Association holds it's annual meeting and election of officers. Alumni are involved in Founders' activities, recognizing excellence in all aspects of campus life including our graduates' service and contributions to their alma mater, community and professions.

The spring Anniversary Reunion brings graduating classes back to campus for community and campus tours, class meetings, and special recognition for the graduates who graduated 50 or more years ago. Reunions for classes, special interest groups, clubs and organizations are scheduled periodically or as requested. Several informal gatherings are organized each year both on and off-campus in conjunction with special events of interest to our alumni.

Annual Alumni Activities Include:
  • Scholarship Social and Auction
  • Homecoming
  • Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame

Alumni Association and Foundation scholarships provide financial assistance for a broad spectrum of MSU-Northern students.

The primary goal of the MSU-Northern Foundation is to provide scholarship opportunities for MSU-Northern students.

Nearly 79 percent of our student body receives some sort of scholarship assistance. With assets over two million, the Foundation awards more than $190,000 in campus-based scholarships each year. Funds are raised during the Fall Fund Drive and invested throughout the year to support the continuation of these programs.

Through endowments and planned giving the MSU-Northern Foundation is able to provide 44 $1,000 Presidential Scholarships to help recruit Montana High School seniors of high academic standing. These renewable scholarships are awarded regardless of financial need, bringing Montana’s finest to MSU-Northern.

The Alumni Endowed Scholarship program awards Keith Clawson Memorial Scholarships to one single-parent scholarship and a non-traditional student scholarship, all presently valued at $750. Proceeds from the annual Alumni Association Scholarship Social and Auction, other fund-raising events, and the Alumni Association's annual fund Membership Drive support scholarships for the Fine Arts, a Graduate student, and student athletes participating in intercollegiate men's and women's basketball, wrestling, volleyball, football, golf and rodeo. Additional Alumni endowments support the Class of 1941 Scholarship and other designated scholarships.

PublicationsTop

The Northern Alumni Association publishes a magazine dedicated to the Northern family, the Aurora Borealis, in the fall and spring. The magazine contains campus news and alumni notes to keep our alumni updated on issues, activities, people and programs. The Alumni Association is going green! In order to accomplish this we need your help. The Aurora will be a digital magazine that will be emailed out to everyone that would like one, but we need your email address to do so. You can simply fill out the update your information form and we will be happy to email you a copy. We will have a couple printed copies for our alumni membership holders and donors. If you would like to be a membership holder simply fill out the online form or call and email us at: 406-265-3711, alumni@msun.edu.

As an alum of a friend of Northern we would like to include you in our newsletter the Aurora. If you have any recent personal announcements you wish to have published, including marriages, birth/adoptions, promotions, job changes, retirement, advanced degrees, recent accomplishments, honors and or awards, please feel free to fill out the form to let us know how you are doing!

Campus EnrichmentTop

Each year University departments have important, often one-time needs that are not covered by the general fund budget. Gifts to the Northern Alumni Association and MSU-Northern Foundation provide an extra margin of excellence for a variety of campus projects, programs and activities.

Montana State University-Northern is a State supported institution, but the State of Montana does not fully fund the costs of providing educational programs. Your gifts to the VandeBogart Library, faculty research, fine arts, athletics and various scholarship programs help ensure the continued success of these efforts. Your unrestricted alumni gifts fund ongoing activities such as Homecoming, Founders' Day, Athletic Hall of Fame, publications, campus improvements, and networking efforts.

The Alumni Membership Drive is the Association's major fundraising project and helps us update alumni files, while the Foundation conducts an Annual Fund Drive to solicit support within the community and a variety of planned giving programs throughout the year. Each year these projects raise over a million dollars for Montana State University-Northern.

ChaptersTop

The Alumni Association encourages the development of alumni chapters and clubs. Clubs and chapters may be organized by geographical boundaries or by special interest area. All formal clubs and chapters must be chartered by the Northern Alumni Association with the goal of serving the University and our graduates. Chapters have elected officers, must meet at least four times a year, and may receive Alumni Association funds through a mutual agreement with the Association’s Executive Council. For further information or assistance in establishing a chapter, contact the Alumni Office.

The Northern Alumni Association and MSU-Northern Foundation were located in historic Donaldson Hall. Originally constructed in 1936 as a women’s residence hall, the stately building holds fond memories for many alumni. In 1985 the Alumni Association restored and refurbished the west wing of the main floor, creating a warm, inviting "Commons" area for alumni, friends and the campus community. However when heating expenses arose, the building was shut down and all offices moved elsewhere on campus. The Alumni Association and Foundation are currently trying to negotiate repairs or renovation to save the building. We are now located in Cowan Hall rooms 305 and 307.

The Alumni Association maintains records on all Northern graduates and friends who indicate they would like to participate in the growth and direction of MSU-Northern. When you move, please send us your new address and phone number so you will continue to receive information about alumni activities and special events that may be planned in your area. Drop us a note (c/o MSU-Northern, P.O. Box 7751, Havre, MT 59501), call us at 406.265.3711 or e-mail us at alumni@msun.edu. We want to hear from you!
