307.1 Safety and Disaster Committee

The Montana State University-Northern Safety and Disaster Program is required under the Montana Safety Culture Act (39-71-1504, MCA). More importantly, this policy is being implemented on behalf of Montana State University-Northern campus community.

The objectives of the MSUN Safety and Disaster Program are to provide to the best of our ability:

  • Safe working environment;
  • Protection of the student body and general public;
  • Reduction of costs associated with accidental losses.

The achievement of these objectives will be based on:

  • A sound program to ensure that safety is an integral part of day-to-day operations and work procedures.
  • All campus members taking an active interest, participating and abiding by applicable federal, state, local and agency safety rules and regulations.
  • Development of Pre-Disaster Mitigation, Disaster/Emergency Response/Recovery and Post-Disaster/Emergency Restoration Plans.
  • Successful table top and live drills for disasters and emergencies.

The Committee will:

  • Meet at least monthly.
    • Specific topics may go to sub committees which would meet in place of the full committee.
    • Committee members will be notified in advance of the meeting and sent the agenda.
  • Review/respond to safety concerns.
  • Develop, implement and document:
    • Workplace/equipment inspections;
    • Accident investigations;
    • Safety training;
    • Task analysis.

The Safety and Disaster Committee, to advise the Risk Management/Fiscal Officer, who advises the Chancellor in the development of a safety culture at Montana State University-Northern consists of the following representatives:

  • Risk Management/Fiscal Officer
  • Director of Facilities Services
  • Director of Human Resources
  • Director of Student Health Services
  • Director of Food Services
  • Director of Housing
  • Director of ReSPONSE
  • Director of GYM facilities
  • Assistant Dean of Students
  • Director of Information Technology

The Safety and Disaster Committee members are members of the Emergency Response Team as well as additional faculty, staff and students that are appointed to be building contact people.

Each member will:

  • Participate in NIMS (National Incident Management System) and trainings.
  • Participate in table top and live drills.
  • Participate in campus and community disaster training in accordance with the Montana University System Disaster Preparedness Committee.
  • Promote awareness of safety and training to reduce the costs associated with accident losses.
  • Promote awareness of the Montana University System’s Self Funded Workers Compensation Plan.

If a committee member misses a meeting, it will be their responsibility to review the minutes and come prepared to the next meeting. When training sessions begin, if a member is absent they may not have the opportunity to make the training up, be reassigned to a different sub committee or be dropped from the Committee.
