HEALTH PROMOTION
Program Overview Our health Promotion program prepares you for a career as a health care professional capable of implementing the disease preventing wellness programs sought after by today’s health care delivery system. The program offers a Bachelor’s degree and a minor for students interested in working in the health and fitness field, but do not wish to seek a physical education teaching endorsement. The focus is on providing students with an educational background in health, fitness, and business with an emphasis on corporate, rather than scholastic situations. The degree emphasizes hands-on learning experiences within the health promotion field through its required internship component. Student interns will work with small community or business based organizations to become familiar with the process of designing, developing, maintaining and evaluating health promotion programs.
Career Opportunities Graduates of health promotion programs are frequently employed as consultants to businesses and communities seeking to establish wellness programs. Others work for corporations, HMO’s, or other groups interested in providing health and fitness services.
Admissions Policies Along with regular university admissions standards, the HP program has established additional requirements that must be met for admission into upper division health promotion courses and the internship component. These program standards include: 1. A GPA of at least 2.5 at the end of the sophomore year 2. A student portfolio of work completed toward the degree 3. A letter of support from a faculty member 4. An essay addressing a student’s career goals in relation to the degree 5. Current First Aid and CPR certifications.
